Abstract
Short and medium distance fiber-optic networks have a potentially high-volume demand for active bidirectional couplers. An active bidirectional coupler (Fig. 1) uses a beam splitter to couple light from an emitter into the fiber and light from the fiber to the detector. This type of coupler is also called a 3-dB coupler as a 3-dB power penalty is paid in any beam splitter coupling scheme. For the coupler injection molding manufacturing was chosen as most appropriate for this high-volume demand.
