Abstract
An increasing demand for large-capacity reliable international telecommunications links has led to various proposals introducing digital fiber-optic undersea cable systems. However, the task to minimize the cost of a fiber-optic undersea cable communications system while simultaneously achieving the required reliability using suitable digital repeater electronics is formidable. We report here an in-depth analysis of operational, reliability, and system requirements for such communications systems in the Atlantic and Pacific regions. The presentation will include a critical evaluation of various subsystems such as optical-fiber cable, digital optical repeater, terminal equipment, as well as other overall system requirements for optical and electrical power budgets.
