Abstract
Recently direct optical amplification in fibers using the Raman effect has been investigated tor ultralong distances and high-speed optical signal transmission.1–3 An important problem in Raman amplification is that the frequencies to be amplified are not selectable, because they are determined by the pumping frequency and a frequency shift peculiar to the fiber material. As an example, consider the case of Raman amplification In silica fibers at a pumping wavelength of 1.32 μm; the amplified signal is ~1.40 μm,1 which, however, is very close to the first harmonic of the OH absorption peak.
