Abstract

One approach to achieving high-data-rate lightwave systems with very long repeater spans is to operate at the loss minimum at ~1.55μm with a dispersion-shitted single-mode fiber (λo = 1.55μm) and a multimode laser source. Paek et al.1 first pointed out some advantages of triangular profile cores. Saifi et al.2 first reported on the advantages of using a triangular profile core fiber at 1.55μm and demonstrated the fabrication of low-loss fiber with λ0 = 1.402μm. Subsequent work by Ainslie et al.3 and Jang et al.4 reported on low-toss fiber with λ0 optimized at 1.55μm. This work reports on further improvements in the transmission properties of such fiber as well as its splicing and cabling performance.
