Improved macrobend optical-fiber tapped delay line for high-speed signal processing

Abstract

Tapped delay lines having large numbers of taps are useful in a variety of signal processing applications where large processing gains are required. Delay lines having variably spaced taps can also be useful In many applications such as Fourier trans- formation and pulse compression. The macrobend optical fiber tapped delay line has been used to demonstrate a variety of signal processing functions at gigahertz rates.1,2 Thus far, however, devices with only modest numbers of equally spaced taps have been constructed. In this presentation we report on the construction of macrobend tapped delay lines having large numbers of taps. We also discuss a proposal for a chirped macrobend delay line and the application of such a device to matched filtering
