Low-threshold multiple-cavity longitudinal-mode stabilized buried heterostructure lasers

Abstract

There has recently been interest in the use of active single external cavities biased below threshold to longitudinally mode stabilize semiconductor lasers, in particular, the so-called cleaved- coupled-cavity or C3 structure. The major applications of such a scheme include maintaining a single longitudinal mode while PCM modulating the laser, modulating the cavity to produce a noncoherent FSK modulation of the laser, or modulating the cavity in association with a long external cavity to produce coherent FSK modulation of a single laser mode.
