Abstract
An efficient laser-to-single-mode fiber coupler is a key feature in the design and development of a practical semiconductor laser diode package for optical fiber communication applications. Various coupling techniques utilizing spherical,1,2 cylindrical, or Selfoc lenses,3-6 lens combinations,7,8 and microlenses fabricated on the fiber tips9-15 have been reported to demonstrate improved coupling efficiencies (ranging from−2 to−6 dB) over the simple butt-coupling method. The trade-off for higher coupling efficiencies is that all these techniques are associated with submicron type alignment accuracy requirements.
