Abstract
In transmission systems having demountable connectors without index-matching, interference effects in the air gap between fiber endfaces can cause a maximum reflection of 0.7 dB.1 Optical feedback from reflections was found to generate intensity noise in lasers2 and introduce power penalties in digital transmission.3 This paper reports on the effect of optical feedback on high-bit-rate transmission using both InAsGaP/InP buried-heterostructure (BH) and stripe-geometry lasers.
