Abstract

Single-mode fibers with very low attenuations in the wavelength range from 1.3 to 1.6 μm have been fabricated by various processes.1-3 The ultimate low loss In single-mode fibers Is basically limited by the Rayleigh scattering loss and the IR absorption edge. In single-mode fibers, with a significant fraction of the total power propagating in the cladding, the effective Rayleigh scattering loss depends on the power distribution and the Rayleigh scattering coefficients in both the core and cladding. Also, with the mode power distribution varying with the V parameter, a simple λ−4 relationship for scattering loss is not quite accurate.
