Abstract

Research on optical fiber telecommunication systems and components continues in parallel with manufacture and installation of intercity, metropolitan area, and local feeder-link systems. More sophisticated and higher-performance lasers, fibers, and multiplexers will result. Speculative work on materials and coherent optical systems is supported.
