Abstract

Single-mode fiber-to-fiber couplers are important elements in single-mode branching networks and in fabrication of fiber-optic devices which use interferometric principles for their operation. For such applications, a rugged coupler is required. ITT EOPD has fabricated single-mode couplers by a permanently fused fabrication process method which requires no removal of fiber material. Packaging of the couplers is simplified and also more rugged than previous approaches.
