Abstract

Low-attenuation high-bandwidth low-OH content graded-index fibers made by the outside vapor deposition (OVD) process have been reported.1 Prior developments have, however, been made using a preform size of 450-500 g deposited at average rates of 1.3-1.5 g/min. The size and deposition rate of OVD preforms have now been increased to 1800 g and 4.3 g/min with no degradation in properties and minimal equipment changes.
