Abstract
We have previously reported increased losses in dispersion-shifted fibers made by MCVD. The loss increases with drawing temperature, and we showed the excess loss to be an absorption effect whose mechanism was uncertain.1 The wavelength dependence of the absorption did not correspond to any known drawing-induced phenomenon. Other workers have seen minimal dependence of loss on drawing conditions in other multimode fibers.2,3 Further investigation has shown the excess loss to depend not only on temperature but also on drawing speed. A number of fibers ~1 km long have been drawn from the same preform, with 2a ~ 5 μm and δn(peak)~ 0.013. The indicated drawing temperature was varied between 1950 and 2150°C (>50- to <5-g tension in the fiber), and the drawing speed ranged from 9 to 55 m/min. The drawing-induced loss may be displayed as (total intrinsic) loss,1 and in Figs. 1 and 2 the temperature and speed dependence of this excess loss are shown for 0.75- and 1.0-μm wavelengths. Clearly from these results one expects to pull this type of fiber at high speed and low temperature if loss is to approach the intrinsic level tor this glass composition. These requirements tend to be mutually exclusive since they may lead to fiber weakness.
