Abstract

During planning and assembly of a 31.6-km cabled monomode fiber system at BTRL, equivalent step-index (ESI) profiling1 was used extensively in the characterization and selection of the system fibers and also for prediction of link performance. In the ESI technique, a propagation characteristic, the spot size variation with wavelength, of a short section of fiber was measured, and the ESI profile which gave the best fit to the experimental data was selected as a good approximation to the behavior of the real profile.
