Abstract
Fiber optical gyroscopes which measure absolute rotation rate are a potentially important application of fiber optics. The principal merits of the optical gyroscope should be high sensitivity due to long path lengths and a compact and rugged device package. The ruggedness results when optical beams are guided by solid-state waveguides throughout the gyrooptical circuit, which includes a beam splitter.
