Abstract
An experimental program was conducted to identify fusion splice failure mechanisms and modes on a first attempt, qualitative basis (see Table I). As a result of this effort, an improved technique for splices using flame fusion has been developed. Splices fabricated using this technique have shown an average strength of >1000 MPa or more than a 100% increase over the unimproved technique (see Fig. 1). Critical factors in the procedure involve minimizing the mechanical and environmental effects to the exposed glass along with minimizing physical deformations of the fiber at the splice.
