Abstract

A transatlantic submarine cable using single-mode optical fibers is presently being planned for installation in the latter half of this decade.1 Repeater spacing is expected to be 35-50 km. To minimize the number of fiber-to-fiber splices or perhaps eliminate them entirely, very long continuous lengths of fiber will be required.
