Abstract

Integrated optics directional couplers are driven by electric fields only.1 We present experiments on the interaction between surface acoustic waves (SAW) and directional couplers. The principle of the device is shown schematically in Fig. 1. It consists of a normally passive directional coupler of length I and an interdigital transducer (IDT), which is optimized for a special frequency.2 As substrate material z-cut LiNbO3 is used, the SAW travels in the y direction. Optical waveguides are fabricated by Ti-indiffusion. Waveguide dimensions and diffusion parameters are optimized for monomode transmission at either 0.633 or 1.3 μm.
