Abstract

Many components for use with optical fibers include some form of optics (lenses, mirrors, etc.) to collect the light from an input fiber and couple it to an output fiber. In these components the imperfections and misalignments of the optics usually result in significant contributions to the losses of the components. We have developed, and demonstrated, techniques for efficiently characterizing and analyzing the effects of these imperfections and misalignments in components for use with single-mode and multimode fibers. The single-mode technique is based on diffraction theory, and the multimode technique is based on geometrical optical ray tracing.
