Abstract

In the design and modeling of single-mode waveguides, one of the parameters of interest is the cutoff wavelength λc of the LP11 mode. In this paper we present measurements using an easily implemented refracted power technique which allows an accurate determination of this cutoff wavelength. The technique is based on the sudden change in refracted power at the cutoff wavelength, and the insensitivity to coating or leaky mode effects determines the intrinsic guide values. In addition this parameter, coupled with the transmitted power toss peaks induced by periodic curvature perturbations of a known frequency, allows the propagation constant β for the waveguide to be obtained. Such information is of interest in the design and microbend studies of single-mode waveguides.
