Abstract
With the rapid progress in the development and use of optical fiber technology, need has arisen for an increased economical utilization of the information carrying capacity of the optical fiber transmission medium. One potential solution is offered by wavelength division multiplexing (WDM) techniques in which several different optical wavelengths are coupled into a single fiber. Analyses of WDM systems have indicated that substantial reductions in system costs may be realized when introducing fibers into the field.
