Effects of water absorption peaks on transmission characteristics of LED-based lightwave systems operating near wavelength

Abstract

Low losses and low chromatic dispersion properties of high-quality lightguides enable reliable end potentially low-cost LED sources to be considered for high-bit-rate multimode systems operating near 1.3-µm wavelength. Chromatic-dispersion-limited system bandwidths can be significantly increased if fiber loss peaks, due to OH-ion absorption, at λ = 1.24 and 1.39 µm, reduce the power spectral width of propagating LED signals. These advantageous loss filtering effects have been used to calculate maximum repeater spacings for potential 274-Mbit/sec LED-based systems.
