Abstract
Phosphate glass fiber1 composed basically of P2O5 and Ga2O3 has a high N.A., is resistant to water,2 and has high tensile strength.3 These features give it many potential applications especially for data and computer processing links. We have developed a new fabrication process suitable for mass-producing low loss phosphate glass fiber. The raw materials were prepared by liquid-phase reactions in a closed system, and in the melting process melts were dehydrated by bubbling in a Cl2-O2 mixture. The OH absorption loss was below 1 dB/km at 0.98-μm wavelength.
