Abstract

Recently there has been considerable interest in the output characteristics of single-mode solid-state diode lasers1 Measurements have been made of the diode laser's amplitude noise2 and spectral characteristics3 with and without optical feedback into the laser cavity. In this paper the low-frequency phase noise (related to the frequency stability of the laser) of six different diode lasers, both gain guided and index guided, has been Investigated; the frequency dependence of the phase noise has also been determined. The origin of the observed phase noise is discussed.
