Abstract

The Bell System has begun the commercial deployment of lightguide transmission media for the FT3 44.7-Mbit/sec interoffice trunk system.1 We report on the technology and philosophy used and describe the medium performance achieved on the first two installations that were fully engineered and installed by Bell Telephone Operating Cos. (Telcos), namely, the Southern Bell and Bell of Pennsylvania installations near Atlanta and Pittsburgh. In total, these installations represent ~75 sheath km, 3200 km of optical fiber, and 7200 optical fiber splices.
