Abstract
Suitable optical couplers must be developed before single-fiber transmission technology can be successfully applied to distributed data-processing equipment interconnection. The potential advantages of fiber-optic data buses over conventional techniques are the driving factors in this coupler development. Some of the advantages to be gained are the elimination of ground loops and immunity to EMI. At the same time, it is necessary that FO data-bus techniques result in minimum cost and complexity.
