Abstract

Single-mode fibers are candidates for high-data-rate long-distance transmission systems. Low-loss single-mode fibers operating near the dispersion-free wavelength are useful transmission media for large-capacity digital trunk transmission system. In addition, single-mode fibers offer a viable approach to new applications involving optical-phase-change detection, such as gyroscopes and acoustic sensors, which require single-polarization single-mode propagation. Also, coupling to integrated optics is more efficient than use of multimode fibers.
