Origin of temperature dependence of attenuation in optical cables

Abstract

Soft buffer layers have been found greatly to improve optical-fiber cable performance1-4 by reducing the microbending loss produced in the fiber by external perturbations or by cable irregularities. A side view of a typical soft buffered cable is shown in Fig. 1. The fiber is surrounded by a soft silicone layer, which is covered by a tightly adhering hard jacket, typically Hytrel or nylon.
