Spontaneous Light-mediated Magnetism in Cold Atoms

Abstract

We study theoretically and experimentally an unconventional form of magnetism where interaction is mediated by photons reflected from a feedback mirror. We identify phases related to dipolar and quadrupolar magnetic ordering in the transverse plane.
