Fluorescence spectra and lifetimes of alkyl derivatives of fluorescein in the presence of liposomes

Abstract

We present results of experimental analysis of major fluorescence characteristics, namely spectral band, intensity and lifetime(s), of the two alkyl derivatives of fluorescein, MitoFluo and C8-FL. The fluorescence was monitored both in the pure buffer solution and with addition of the two types of liposomes, DOPC and soybeanPC+20%Cardiolipin. DOPC liposomes were shown to cause a shift of the fluorescence maximum and a change of the characteristic lifetime along with the appearance of an additional fluorescence component with a shorter lifetime for both fluorescein derivatives, while soy- beanPC+20%Cardiolipin liposomes provided neither of these effects.
