Giant higher-order multipoles enable strong intrinsic chirality in planar nanostructures

Abstract

We demonstrate near-unity circular dichroism and polarization rotation exceeding 100,000°/mm in planar dielectric nanostructures at visible wavelengths, at normal incidence. Such strong intrinsic chiral behavior exists due to the excitation of giant higher-order multipoles.
