Abstract
The Zernike circle polynomials are in widespread use for wavefront analysis of rotationally symmetric systems with circular pupils because they are orthogonal over and represent balanced aberrations for such pupils. We discuss the corresponding polynomials for noncircular pupils such as annular, elliptical, hexagonal, rectangular, or square. We also consider such polynomials for anamorphic systems.
