Abstract

The nonlinear optical phenomenon of second harmonic generation (SHG) has applications in numerous areas including lasing, microscopy, and switching. One simple system that can be used for efficient on-chip SHG is a ring resonator side-coupled to a slab waveguide. The advantage of using the ring resonator is that its resonant properties allow for enhancement of nonlinear effects, and the Q and position in frequency of the resonance can be tuned by simply changing the physical properties of the resonator.
