Watching phonon wavepackets: imaging quantum well wavefunctions and ripples on crystals with ultrashort laser pulses

Abstract

Phonon wavepackets are excited in semiconductor quantum wells and on thin film structures with ultrashort wavelength-tunable optical pulses. We demonstrate how the electron and hole wavefunctions of the wells can be probed and how the thin film acoustic dispersion can be measured by means of ultrafast interferometric optical detection.
