Nonlinear effects in optical communication systems

Open Access Open Access

Abstract

In this tutorial the physical principles that underly optical pulse propagation in a fiber will be reviewed, and the nonlinear effects that impair the performance of dispersion-managed communication systems, based on quasi-soliton and pseudo-linear pulses, will be described. Such effects include noise- and interchannel-collision-induced arrival-time and phase jitter, and intrachannel four-wave mixing. Full-text article is not available.
