Abstract

Discussed are nonlinear relativistic optical interactions, occuring when laser light fields are intense enough to accelerate electrons to relativistic velocities. By using overlapping laser pulses, energetic charged particles can either be trapped or accelerated in a controlled manner. Also generated are keV-energy x-ray beams, which have ultrashort (femtosecond) pulse durations.
