Abstract

In this paper we evaluate the performance of forward error correction (FEC) techniques in the presence of four wave mixing (FWM) and dispersion induced inter-symbol interference (ISI). A comparison with the detuning technique [1] is also presented, for the case of FWM penalty mitigation. FEC has been widely used in long haul submarine optical transmission systems, both repeated [2] and unrepeated [3] and its performance in the presence of polarization mode dispersion (PMD) has also been investigated [4,5]. The influence of non-linearities on optical systems that use FEC has recently been reported [6].
