Abstract
Both, the continuously increasing performance of microchips (logic LSIs, microprocessors, etc.) and the rapid increase in network traffic (Internet, enterprise networks, etc.) require expanded bandwidth of on-board and backplane interconnections e.g. in large scale computers and large capacity switches. Since the performance of the conventional electrical interconnection technology is limited through the underlying physical properties, optical interconnections are now drawing a wide attention as a most promising alternative. The concept our work is based on, comprises the use of optical multimode waveguides which are embedded into printed circuit boards [1].
