Abstract

Starting from a new unified theory of coherence and polarization, we show that partially polarized light can be generated by correlations of unpolarized components. This prediction is verified by the use of a Mach-Zehnder interferometer, demonstrating the possibility of producing light with adjustable spectrum and controlled degree of polarization.
