Abstract

One approach to 3D photonic crystals is the self-assembly of colloidal microspheres. Using this method, we have recently demonstrated high-quality silicon photonic crystals (inverted opals) which exhibit optical properties consistent with a photonic band gap. We will discuss our measurements and outline future challenges for self-assembled photonic materials.
