Abstract

All-optical devices are anticipated to be part of future high-speed telecommunication networks. They may replace optical/electrical/optical (OEO) switch fabrics at network nodes and potentially lead to new network architectures, where signals are transmitted all-optically - i.e. without any opto-electronic conversion. We first review all-optical switch fabric concepts and then discuss key all-optical elements.
