Polarization-dependent loss in long-period fiber gratings: modal birefringence

Abstract

Modal birefringence significantly influences the polarization-dependent loss (PDL) of long-period fiber gratings (LPFGs). A new method has been developed for measuring PDL in LPFGs based on resonant wavelength separation. Measurement results for two different types of LPFGs, ultraviolet-induced and carbon dioxide-laser-induced, are given.
