Effect of RIN of a Raman co-pump on the BER for long-haul transmission

Abstract

We theoretically demonstrate that a given amount of the relative intensity noise (RIN) transferred from a Raman copump to a signal degrades the signal’s bit error rate (BER) by about an order of magnitude more than does the same amount of the amplified spontaneous emission (ASE) added to the signal.
