Abstract

Increasing interest in metro, access, fiber-to-the-home and fiber-to-the-desk markets has motivated research to integrate passive optical components with arrays of high optical gain amplifiers into low cost, compact packages. In this paper, we report the first 3-cm long monolithic optical amplifier array based on high gain per unit length erbium-doped phosphate glass – and pumped by one multimode pump laser. The monolithic amplifier array is fabricated using a low cost, scalable and highly reproducible fiber drawing method. The high erbium and ytterbium doped phosphate fiber can generate high gain per unit length without quenching. The outer shape of the 3-core array fiber is rectangular with dimensions of 112 µm × 66 µm and the three cores are placed on a 30 µm pitch. The 3-core array fiber is sandwiched and bonded to a fused silica chip. The bonded chip is mechanically polished on both end facets to achieve low butt-coupling loss. A dielectric mirror is attached to one end of the chip to allow signals to pass through the array twice. Figure 1 shows a schematic representation of the amplifier array chip.
