Abstract
We have worked on extending the wavelength of GaSb superluminescent LEDs (SLEDs) beyond 3 µm. SLEDs offer a unique combination of optical characteristics including high brightness, good beam directionality and broad emission spectrum. When integrated with novel Si-based filters [1], this kind of light source would enable the detection of multiple environmental gases with a single measurement. We are reviewing our recent work on demonstrating GaSb-SLEDs emitting at 2 μm with different waveguide designs [2]. State-of-the-art SLED results for emission at 2.65 µm and strategies for extending the emission wavelength beyond 3 µm are discussed.
