Fully-automated grating coupler design through adjoint optimization

Abstract

By leveraging adjoint optimization, we develop an efficient algorithm for designing 1D grating couplers for different functionalities without any human input and use it to design a fiber-to-chip blazed grating with under 0.18 dB loss.
