Cell deformation and assessment with tunable “tug-of-war” optical tweezers

Abstract

We assess red-blood-cell (RBC) deformability under different osmotic conditions by employing novel “tug-of-war” optical tweezers. Such a photonic tool enables stable trapping and stretching of single RBCs, attaining over 15% of cell deformation.
