Optimizing femtosecond pulse amplification with erbium-doped fibers

Abstract

Optical pulse amplification with erbium- doped fibers is currently of great interest for the generation and transmission of high bit rate optical signals. Recent experiments have revealed that fundamental limitations exist to the amplification of femtosecond pulses: the finite gain bandwidth may not compensate for the Raman effect and the soliton shifts out of the gain curve.1
