Abstract

Vertical-cavity surface-emitting-lasers have already proved to be promising devices in the optical communications field. However, contrary to the initially claimed single-mode emission,1 essential for most uses, systematic spectrally resolved measurements have shown a multimode emission.2 Specifically, the index-guided, ion beam etched, air-post VC laser structure has shown a complicated multimode behavior, even at bias currents near threshold.1,2 In this paper we present, we believe for the first time, a theoretical investigation of the transverse-mode characteristics of the SQW-GaAs index-guided laser structure2.
