Abstract

We report on the performance of an eyesafe laser source in which the output of a diode-pumped Nd: YAG laser operating at 1.064 μm is frequency-shifted to 1.61 or 1.54 μm in an optical parametric oscillator (OFO). The Nd: YAG laser was side-pumped by four 5-bar diode arrays. The cavity configuration employed is depicted schematically in Fig. 1. The Brewster faces on the laser rod produce an elliptical TEM00 cavity mode with ~80% overlap with the elliptical gain distributed generated by side-pumping. We obtained 32-mJ TEM00 output, compared with 40-mJ multimode. The laser produced 20 mj in a 22-ns pulse when Q-switched.
